Why Pro-Lifers Should Vote Democrat (Seriously).

The Roe V. Wade ruling was made in 1973, making this the 40th consecutive year republicans have campaigned on banning abortion and done precisely nothing.  Think about that for a second.  Look at the "obameter" of obama's campaign promises, the majority of them (and there are a lot) are "kept" or "in the works", and that's in 4 years with a level of opposition from the minority party that is literally unprecedented in american politics (the abuse of the cloture vote in the senate especially, google it).  And people are pissed at obama.  Imagine if democrats promised something constantly and didn't deliver for forty years.

So you might be wondering why republicans do nothing about abortion.  There are two reasons - one, they don't want to lose the issue.  Without pro-lifers their party's base shrinks significantly.  But that's nothing compared to the second reason - if they banned abortion, all abortion, women would turn out in massive numbers to vote against them and destroy them in the next election.

So they campaign on it year after year but do nothing.

But even so you might say, why vote for evil baby-killer democrats?  Because while democrats aren't going to be willing to ban abortion altogether, many, including president obama, have voiced their support for a ban of late-term abortion, and that's not nothing.  So in terms of what is politically possible the democrats might ban late term abortion and the republicans will never move forward on any meaningful abortion restriction.

“There's no legislation with regards to abortion that I'm familiar with that would become part of my agenda.”

- Mitt Romney, 6 days ago.

"I will preserve and protect a woman's right to choose, and I am devoted and dedicated to honoring my word in that regard."

- Mitt Romney, 2002

Late term abortion is fantastically unpopular.  How unpopular?  Well there are 25,750 medical clinics in the united states - know how many perform late term abortions?  Three.  Planned parenthood has 820 locations - know how many perform late term abortions?  Zero.

Even among abortion doctors in abortion clinics late term abortions are overwhelmingly unpopular.  There is potential here to actually ban the practice.  Conservatives and liberals could, with just a push, work together on something both sides overwhelmingly agree on.  But no republican will move on it.

If pro-life organizations start putting their support behind democrats that support banning late-term abortion they could really get something done about it.

Or you could spend another half a century supporting republicans who have zero interest in banning abortion.

Your call.

My suspicion is that many Republicans use the abortion issue just to corral single-issue voters.

And I'm going to go get some fast food. My suspicion is that McDonald's has some fast food.

Sounds like a lot of good reasons not to vote for Obama. Thanks for explaining that.

Oh come on, liberals.  We don't need a democratic party that's even more right wing.  It's bad enough what they're willing to compromise over NOW.

You could do a similar post on gun control. Romney was adamantly pro-gun control as a Massachusetts Senator, and supported all kinds of gun restrictions, including a total ban on automatic weapons. Obama, as President, has actually removed gun regulations. His two most prominent bills, for example, permitted people to carry guns into national forests and onto AmTrack trains. Romney was well-regarded by gun control groups, while Obama received an "F" from the Brady Campaign, the most prominent gun control lobby.

Here is why they shouldn't. They Support Planned Parenthood, who primarily specializes in Eugenics. Yes, they do some cancer screening and other tests and things but everyone know you go to them for Abortion. If we are a Christian we know that Jesus said to love our neighbor, and to Love life so we cannot ethically support ANY Party who stands for Murder. besides if you wikipedia Margaret Sanger the Founder of Planned Parenthood you will find out she was openly racist and wanted to depopulate the earth. Who would want to support an organization like that? Not me.

@QuantumStorm - Of course.

@EmilyandAtticus - No need to be catty.

@NeverSubmit - Fuck right wing left wing, just do what is right and makes sense.

@UTRow1 - I agree, romney's taken almost every position on almost every issue.  Of course he's never flip-flopped on being white.

Actually come to think of it...

@derekwilson24 - "Here is why they shouldn't. They Support
Planned Parenthood, who primarily specializes in Eugenics."

So does every sperm bank.  When they give women a picture of the person whose sperm they're considering using and their IQ, age, occupation etc that's eugenics.  You gonna go protest outside a sperm bank now?

"Yes, they do
some cancer screening and other tests and things but everyone know you
go to them for Abortion."

And by federal law none of the money congress gives to planned parenthood funds abortion.

"If we are a Christian we know that Jesus said
to love our neighbor, and to Love life so we cannot ethically support
ANY Party who stands for Murder."

Murder is the unlawful, pre-meditated killing of one human being by another.  A) a cell is not a human being, and b) abortion is not unlawful.  Does abortion become more like murder the further on a pregnancy gets?  Yes.  Should we ban late-term abortion?  Yes.  Is your animosity toward people you disagree with stopping that from happening?  Yes.

"besides if you wikipedia Margaret
Sanger the Founder of Planned Parenthood you will find out she was
openly racist and wanted to depopulate the earth. Who would want to
support an organization like that? Not me."

Margaret Sanger was born a few years after the end of slavery.  Both planned parenthood and the country have changed a lot since then.  Ulysses S. Grant was president when she was born, and he was the last US president to own slaves.  It makes as much sense to refuse a visit to the white house because of racism as it does to shun planned parenthood because of it.  We live in a changing world.

Show me evidence of racism in planned parenthood's policy today and I'll protest next to you.

I find it interesting that a lot of my pro gun, pro death penalty acquaintances also count themselves as "pro life". I wonder...if you gave them a choice of keeping their firearms, or allowing women choice which one would be nearer their hearts?

When asked how I could vote democrat when the MOST important issue is abortion, I reply "is it though?" Yes, to me its very important and weighted heavily on my heart, BUT... if its not the agenda of the Republican Candidate, I have to vote based on the changes we need right now that are actually in motion. I usually respond with "how long has abortion been legal and why have republicans in office not changed it yet?"

All I hear from Romney is "Jobs jobs jobs - and I know how do it." Great sir, and HOW exactly will you do that?

There's another very real reason to support Dems if you're pro-life.

Remember, abortions will happen whether or not they're legal. If you're goal is for abortions not to happen, then you need to address the reasons that women seek abortions in the first place. There's not much we can do to legislate rapists out of existence, and we can't pass a law making medical complications that threaten the life of the mother illegal.

However, the Dems' policies regarding access to contraceptives, sex education, and family planning services will actually decrease the number of women with unwanted pregnancies, and hence will decrease the number of abortions.

It's an intelligent, preventative approach. And it's not one that's supportive by the GOP.

@QuantumStorm - They did in the '04 election.  Karl Rove had a ballot initiative about abortion put on the Ohio ballot so that more anti-abortion voters would turn out for the presidential election.

@albertcarter - Excuse me, I misspoke. You can read my blog and this blog and see that I do, in fact, know Romney was governor of Massachusetts, not a state senator.

You can ignore the other demonstrable facts in my comment, if you please. Also, looking at the set-up of your (new) blog, I would wager that you are another Curtis iteration. However, it won't change them from being factual reality.

I am not the only person who has noted Romney's incredible flip-flop on gun control. Both liberals and conservatives have mocked him on this issue using, essentially, my argument. It's impossible for anyone who has done even cursory research into the issue, like reading the "gun ownership" portion of Romney's wikipedia page, to disagree with these arguments:

While campaigning to represent Massachusetts in the U.S. Senate in 1994, Romney supported the Brady Bill, which imposed a five-day waiting period on gun sales, and a ban on particular semi-automatic rifles.[303] He said at the time, "That's not going to make me the hero of the NRA. I don't line up with the NRA."[304] In 2002, during his campaign for the governorship, Romney said: "We do have tough gun laws in Massachusetts; I support them. I won't chip away at them; I believe they protect us and provide for our safety."[304]

As governor of Massachusetts, in 2004 Romney signed[305] a measure permanently extending a statewide ban on military-style assault weapons, such as AK-47's and Uzi's.[306]At the bill-signing ceremony Romney said, "Deadly assault weapons have no place in Massachusetts.... These guns are not made for recreation or self-defense. They are instruments of destruction with the sole purpose of hunting down and killing people."[305]. . . .

And Obama did receive an "F" from the Brady Campaign for loosening gun restrictions.

Assuming you're not Curtis, you're new around here, so let me cut you in on a secret: I have a huge debating dick. Huge. It's Godzilla-sized. I rip people in twain with it when they disrespect me, and then I salt the earth with their charred ashes.

Don't fret your frosted little head over being wrong too much, though. We all make mistakes. Not me, of course, but most people.

You are the perfect example of useless thought. "oh abortion rights, oh this, oh that." As far as your concerned along with 99 percent of Americans, there is no problem, and by acting like you are for one party or the other, you are just pretending a Democracy exists.

The real issue is people don't give a damn about anything, and there is no cure for this. Given this course, I can predict that something terrible is going to happen, and instead of being disgusted by the turn of events, the victims will rejoice in the destruction.

Our government is a joke, our congressmen are like fat pigs who eat buffets everyday, I wish I could do something to cure this madness. And you are part of the madness.

You know what role you play?

Mr. smarty pants.

@EmilyandAtticus - (1) There is more to women's rights than late term abortions. A lot more, particularly since virtually no women have non-medical late term abortions.

(2) Women currently do not have a right to have non-medical late term abortions under federal case law (i.e., the Roe and Casey line of cases). I am not sure, technically, Obama can be against women's rights when those rights don't exist under federal case law. It would be Congress's duty to pass legislation to change these rulings, not the President. But, there's 0 chance that Republicans or conservative democrats would support such a bill, so it's a moot point.

(3) Obama has consistently defended and promoted women's rights. To pretend otherwise is just ludicrous. In fact, I remember reading somewhere that he passed more women's rights legislation than any president in American history, but I can't remember the source. Regardless, the legislation he has signed speaks for itself.

@ItsWhatEyeKnow - Thank you.

@galadrial - Good question.  Of course they would say their gun is for the preservation of life - theirs.

@xXrEMmUsXx - Through the magic of tax cuts.  Ignore the fact that obama passed the largest tax cut in history and it didn't magically fix the economy.

@derekwilson24 - How would the neighborhood prove racism?  They help poor communities who need the most help - poor neighborhoods tend to also be minority neighborhoods.  That's like saying the police are racist for having more patrols in minority parts of town when that is where the poverty and violent crime is often concentrated.  The racism in these cases causes the disparity between wealth and poverty which causes the two to be disproportionate in minority neighborhoods.  So I'm still waiting for your big proof.  And waiting for you to either un-block me or tell me what supposedly offensive thing I said on your blog other than just debunking your post.

@jim_the_american - VERY true.  And I've said this but forgot to mention it here.  When republicans oppose birth control and sex ed it's like planting abortion seeds by the millions.

@EmilyandAtticus - Against the rights of women?  In the original roe v wade decision late term abortion was illegal, it was later expanded by another court decision.  Do you think a woman should be able to abort her baby 5 minutes before giving birth?  How about drowning it five minutes after giving birth?  And even if I grant that obama is somehow bad, romney and the republicans are infinitely worse so still vote democrat.

@derekwilson24 - Thank you for your nuanced and in-depth analysis.  Did you even read the blog?

@agnophilo - Shouldn't that be "fuck democrat, fuck republican"?  If democrats want to return us to the policies of George W Bush or turn back the clock on women's rights, they won't be getting my vote.  Not that there aren't other issues I care about, but both are good examples of things that will get me to vote against somebody.  I'd like to rely on my alternative to those candidates having a competitive amount of funding and recognition.  But if not, I'll certainly vote third-party.
